How to Make the Outdoors More Accessible (Without Geotagging)
Instead of mindlessly geotagging:
- Rethink how you explore. Nature isn’t just about trending destinations. Here’s how to discover places differently.
- Share responsibly. Want to share a special place with others? Learn how to do it within your community—without relying on social media.
- Respect Indigenous lands. Geotagging affects cultural and ecological sites—here’s why that matters.
- Know when geotagging is okay . Some places can handle traffic, others can’t.
Obviously, people learning to enjoy nature, explore new spots, and wanting to share them is not inherently bad. And while I don’t believe in geotagging, I do believe that the outdoors is for everyone, and we should make it more accessible. Our compulsion to engage on social media should not override protecting the outdoors.
Reminder: You Can (and Already Do) Make a Difference
Saying, “It’s all big corporations’ fault, there’s nothing we can do,” or, “My actions won’t have an effect,” doesn’t cut it.
Part of positive change is modifying your own behavior!
